The 737 MAX and A320neo family recently received ICAO aircraft type codes, making them easy to track on Flightradar24. Previously, the only way to track these aircraft was via the registration of each aircraft. That made seeing the entire fleet difficult and time consuming. With the new type codes, it is now possible to easily track every aircraft of the type at the same time.

The A320neo Family

The A320neo or ‘new engine option’ family of aircraft consists of the A319neo, A320neo, and A321neo. The neo family is a re-engined version of the existing A320 family of aircraft. The A320neo has been in service since 2016 and the first A321neo was recently delivered. The A319neo had its first flight in March 2017 and is currently undergoing testing and certification.

On 21 May, Cathay Pacific hosted its 2017 Community Day, inviting 100 children and their families on board a Boeing 777-300 for a 90 minute flight from Hong Kong. During the flight, the 777 drew a heart before landing. While Cathay’s 777 certainly isn’t the first to draw a heart, to the best of our knowledge, it is the largest aircraft tracked on Flightradar24 to do so.

Hearts over Hong Kong

The flight departed and arrived in Hong Kong, carrying 100 first time fliers who earned a seat on the flight through a writing competition. Accompanying the children and their families we 60 Cathay Pacific crew members, including pilot Captain Hank Cheng. Cheng completed a round-the-world journey last year in the first home-built aircraft to be registered in Hong Kong.

ADS-B-supported surveillance offers the most promise for the widest variety of safety, environmental, and operational performance solutions and we continue to work with a variety of industry leading partners to develop global coverage solutions. We’re excited to announce today two new initiatives that add to our efforts to track any aircraft, anytime, anywhere.

Flightradar24 Partner with NAVBLUE to Launch N-tracking

Announced at the Paris Air Show, we’re strengthening our existing two-year partnership with NAVBLUE, an Airbus company, to launch N-tracking, a global aircraft surveillance solution. Leveraging our world-leading terrestrial ADS-B network and secure ACARS for remote and oceanic flights, operators will be able to monitor their fleets worldwide. The solution is coupled with an event alert system that detects and highlights any route deviations from the initial flight plan in line with ICAO recommendations. In addition a Collaborative Decision Making Information system provides updates in real-time thanks to Flightradar24 ADS-B data and ACARS messages. It allows dispatchers to better manage airport congestion, delays and turn-around.

“This is another great milestone in the evolution of our partnership with Airbus, and I am excited to work together with Airbus and its partners on the future of global flight tracking” said Philip Plantholt, VP Strategy & Business Development at Flightradar24.

NAVBLUE offerings and the overall industry will benefit in the near future from collaboration with Airbus, Spire, and Flightradar24. This collaboration aims at creating a surveillance digital eco-system fusing space and ground data to provide global, near real time data to track every aircraft, anywhere, anytime.

“At an increasing pace, airlines around the world are looking for more and more comprehensive digital services solutions that is at the heart of our partnership enriched by Airbus Defence and Space, Flightradar24, and Spire” said Mike Hulley, President and CEO at NAVBLUE.

SAGAS – Satellite Augmented Global Aircraft Surveillance

In keeping with our ultimate goal of global ADS-B coverage, we have joined with Airbus Defence & Space, NATS UK, ESSP and GOMSpace to explore the viability of a holistic framework of multi-source ADS-B applications. The consortium has been selected by the European Space Agency to develop ADS-B integrated services reflecting the needs of users and stakeholders for ESA IAP.

Integrating multiple sources of ADS-B data improves overall coverage and reliability and enables a much broader portfolio of possible services. The consortium offers a breadth and depth of experience in airborne and space products, air navigation services, ADS-B data provision, nanosatellite technology, and satellite operations and service management uniquely suited to deliver exemplary multisource ADS-B-based integrated application services.

In episode 8, we recap some of the major announcements from the Paris Air Show, like the launch of the 737 MAX 10, this year’s big seller, Boeing’s tease of a ‘New Market Airplane’, and Airbus’ new A380plus winglets.

A brief apology, as we had earlier planned to discuss ATC privatization, but as everyone we wanted to bring on the show was already in Paris, this was not possible. We will discuss the issue in a future episode.

Paris Air Show Highlights

The 737 MAX 10 was launched and quickly purchased. Boeing’s NMA or what may become the 797 was teased by the company. Airbus added winglets to the A380 to complete the A380plus. Airbus also developed ejectable data and voice recorders for inclusion on the A350 and other aircraft beginning in a few years. And we briefly cover Flightradar24’s partnership with NAVBLUE on N-tracking, a new global coverage solution.

We’d love to hear your thoughts on Airbus’ A380plus winglets. Email us or drop us a note on twitter or Facebook.

With the new Passngr app, a cooperation of German airports lead by Munich airport, users can now track flights arriving and departing Munich, Hamburg, and Dusseldorf airports in real-time. Thanks to the Flightradar24 SDK, users can follow flights from directly inside the Passngr app, now available for Android and iOS, and see a flight’s actual path. Flightradar24 provides real-time data and an intuitive map interface to follow flights to or from all three airports, with more airports to launch the Passngr app soon.

From the arrival or departure boards, users can tap on a live flight to find its exact position of the flight and information about the aircraft and its speed and altitude.

Passngr’s implementation of the Flightradar24 SDK is the first by an airport cooperative, and follows inclusion of the SDK by major airlines, like easyJet, in their mobile apps.

In an effort to mitigate the effects of a planned 16-day strike by its mixed-fleet cabin crew, British Airways is leasing nine A320 aircraft from Qatar Airways. The aircraft were flown from Doha to London on 30 June and will enter service on 1 July.

Qatar Airways A320s are ferried to London for service with British Airways, 30 June

The Aircraft and Initial Destinations

The aircraft are on lease to British Airways via wet lease, meaning the aircraft and crews are provided by Qatar Airways, but will operate with British Airways flight numbers.

The nine aircraft scheduled to fly for British Airways and their initial routes from London are:

  1. A7-ADABrussels
  2. A7-ADBMunich | Nice
  3. A7-ADCOslo | Krakow
  4. A7-ADDSofia | Madrid
  5. A7-ADE — Not yet scheduled
  6. A7-ADFKiev
  7. A7-ADG — Not yet scheduled
  8. A7-ADI — Not yet scheduled
  9. A7-LAAZurich | Tallinn

Aircraft to Spare

Qatar Airways is able to make these aircraft available due to ongoing restrictions on Qatar-registered flights to, from, or through Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Egypt, and the United Arab Emirates. The lack of flights to destinations in these nearby countries, as well as the up-gauging of aircraft on other routes, has left Qatar Airways with excess capacity.

AvTalk Episode 9: Vectors for Landing and Coins for Luck

In episode 9, we talk about some of the stranger aviation stories over the past few weeks, including a passenger new to approach patterns and a woman who threw coins into an engine for luck. We also talk with Jeremy Dwyer-Lindgren Norwegian’s first 737 MAX delivery and long-haul, low-cost flying.

Approach and Landing

A passenger, not understanding how approach patterns work, accused the pilots of her flight of being ‘drunk’. It escalated from there. We talk about why that’s such a serious accusation and how approaches to major airports can sometimes lead to a circuitous path.

The original tweet has since been deleted and person who made the accusation has since protected their twitter account, but the main thread begins here.

Long-haul, Low-cost Flying

Norwegian took delivery of its first 737 MAX last week and our guest, Jeremy Dwyer-Lindgren was on board the 9 hour flight from Seattle to Oslo. Jeremy describes the flight and we discuss the perks and perils of long-haul, low-cost flying.

British Airways leases Qatar A320s

British Airways is flying some short- and medium-haul routes with Qatar Airways aircraft and crews. We talk about why and how you can see which flights will be operated by Qatar Airways aircraft.

An Aircraft Engine is Not a Wishing Well

An elderly woman flying from Shanghai to Guangzhou on China Southern Airlines delayed the flight by five hours after throwing nine coins into the engine for luck during boarding. That’s a 34 minute per coin delay.
